Andrew George Winter, American, 1893 to 1958, watercolor painting on paper depicting a coastal seascape scene. Signed lower right. Framed. Andrew Winter is known for Marine, landscape and genre painting. A colorful, adventurous personality, Andrew Winter was a painter who spent his early years as a mariner, sailing as a mate on square riggers and later on British and American steamships. He was a native of Estonia and became an American citizen in 1921. He studied at the National Academy of Design and in 1925, returned to Europe on a travel fellowship and studied in Rome and Paris. In the 1930s, he and his artist wife Mary settled on Monhegan Island in Maine where he produced a large body of work that reflected his love of the surroundings.
