An antique Russian hand painted icon of Deesis. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Inscribed in Church Slavonic in the upper part. Circa: 19th century. In Byzantine art, and in later Eastern Orthodox art generally, the Deesis or Deisis is a traditional iconic representation of Christ in Majesty or Christ Pantocrator: enthroned, and flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, and sometimes other saints and angels.
