Lot 0323: CENTRAL AFRICAN BAKONGO WOODEN NKISI FIGURE W NAILS

41 reviews

A Central African wooden nkisi nkondi fetish figure, from the Bakongo people of the Congo region, late 19th century. The figure of two heads stands on a base, made of hand carved wood pierced with nails, the neck is wrapped with fabrics. The representation of two heads shows that the Nkisi can see into the world of spirits as well as the living world. Nkisi nkondi is a magical charm carved into the image and likeness of a human being, designed to emphasize its role in peoples lives. It can be used to resolve verbal disputes or lawsuits, as well as as an avenger or defender if witchcraft or any form of evil has been committed.
