A Central African wooden Lega mask with multiple faces of the Bwami people from Congo. The mask is covered with a beautiful, textured patina. The mask is surrounded by small holes and has multiple faces, narrow eyes, and three mouths. One face is mounted on the forehead. The Lega mask has important symbolic and ritual significance, they were used for initiation into the first two levels of Bwami society and were covered with white clay pemba each time they were used. This type of mask was used as part of the cult of the Bwami, an association that organized the social structure and ensured the stability of the Lega community.
