Lot 0335: NEW GUINEAN CARVED WOODEN AGIBA SKULL FIGURE

41 reviews

A Papua New Guinean hand carved wooden skull hook, hanger, or Agiba figure, of Kerewa people. The figure features a flat shape with traditional hand carved patterns, covered with white pigment and mounted on a base. The Agiba, which presided over the skulls acquired by its members, represented the clans strength and vitality. Rattan loops that were positioned over the hook like projections at the base of the Agiba were used to hang the skulls from it. Agiba could only be carved by men who had taken an enemys head.
