An antique 19th century Russian Orthodox icon of Virgin Mary and Christ Child in the Vladimir Mother of God iconography, Volokolamskaya type. Mixed media paintings: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is enclosed in a silver riza or oklad with repousse decor. Incription Vladimir Mother of God in Church Slavonic on the bottom. Hallmark 84 silver standard and makers marks are on the side of the riza. The backside of the icon is covered with pink velvet. Vladimirskaya icon is a 12th-century Byzantine icon, an early example of the Eleusa iconographic type and one of the most culturally significant pieces of art in Russian history. The Volokolamskaya Mother of God is a variation of this iconography, the first version of which arose in the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery. Russian Christian Religious Items and Collectibles.
