An antique Hopi kachina doll. Circa: the late 19th century to early 20th century. Late Traditional era. Hand carved and painted cottonwood figure. Black face is decorated with ceremonial ornaments, ceremonial protruding headdress decorated with feathers. The Hopi people are a Native American ethnic group who primarily live in northeastern Arizona, US. Kachina or katsina figures are used to instruct young women about the immortal beings that act as messengers between humans and the spirit world.
