This mask portrays the face of Hanataka Tengu, the embodiment of powerful and usually malevolent legendary creatures with a long nose, fierce eyes, and square jaw from Japanese folk tales. Covered with red and black lacquer on wood with gold-tone highlights on the eyes. 19th century.
