An antique oil painting on canvas depicting a hunting scene with a couple and wild animals after the original oil painting, The Hunted Slaves, 1861, by Richard Ansdell, British, 1815 to 1885. Signed by the artist, J. P. and dated 1880, lower right. Framed. The artwork depicts two African American slaves facing down a group of hunting dogs as the two slaves flee. Richard Ansdell was a British painter of animals and genre scenes. Richard Ansdell painted a wide range of animal subjects, sporting scenes and romantic narrative pictures. He was influenced by and rivalled Sir Edwin Landseer in the variety of his subject matter and the detailed finish of his paintings, but he lacked Landseers taste for the sentimental and dramatic. Antique English Fine Art, Genre Scene Paintings, Wall Art, and Collectibles. One of a kind artwork.
