A pair of Japanese hand carved wooden figures that feature an impressive gold leaf finish and fine detail work. The first figure represents the legendary warrior Guan Yu, a Chinese military general of the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He was deified in the late 6th century and is still worshipped today as a bodhisattva in Buddhist tradition and as a guardian deity in Chinese folk religion. The second figure represents Guanyin, a character in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese mythology, a bodhisattva or deity who appears mainly in a female form, saving people from all sorts of disasters. She is dressed in robes and standing on a lotus base.
