An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon of Vladimir Mother of God. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Gilt silver riza or oklad with floral repousse decor. Unmarked. The backside of the icon is covered with pink velvet. Vladimirskaya icon is a 12th-century Byzantine icon, an early example of the Eleusa iconographic type and one of the most culturally significant pieces of art in Russian history.
