Lot 0081: POPE PORTRAIT OIL PAINTING AFTER FRANCIS BACON

41 reviews

An oil painting on canvas depicting a portrait of seated Pope after the original oil painting, Pope, circa 1958, by Francis Bacon, Irish, British, 1909 to 1992. Inscribed and titled, on the backside. Framed. Pope from circa 1958 broadcasts Francis Bacons most celebrated and recognizable iconography, which today remains one of the most pertinent, universal, and affecting visions in the history of art. Here, we witness the zenith of Bacons greatest subject, a subject that spanned over twenty years and reveals both Bacon’s love affair with Diego Velazquez and his will to expose the fallacy of such images for a world. Francis Bacon was an Irish born British figurative painter known for his raw, unsettling imagery. Focusing on the human form, his subjects included crucifixions, portraits of popes, self portraits, and portraits of close friends, with abstracted figures sometimes isolated in geometrical structures. One of a kind artwork.
