Lot 0125: ANTIQUE INDIAN BENGALI KALIGHAT GOUACHE PAINTINGS

41 reviews

A collection of three antique Indian Bengali Kalighat gouache paintings on paper. Two paintings depict scenes with a couple of lovers. One work represents a portrait of a seated lady. Unsigned. Circa: early 20th century. Kalighat is a temple area of Kolkata, a city in India, that has the famous Kali Temple. The painters developed their own distinct style of living and working in areas surrounding the temple and the paintings were sold to the shops to temple visitors by stores surrounding the temple complex. This typical style of minimalistic lines has evolved since the 19th century during the British Raj of India. Famous artists like Jamini Roy got their style from this school of Kalighat painters. Antique South Asian Art, Gouache Paintings, and Collectibles. One of a kind artwork.
