An ancient carved marble stone sculpture, the head of Shakyamuni Buddha. Hellenistic style, northwestern region of ancient Gandhara, 3rd century BC. Represents a crowned head with an idealized face and elongated earlobes. Comes on a display stand. In ancient times Gandhara was a trade crossroads and cultural meeting place between India, Central Asia, and the Middle East. The region was subject to Achaemenian Persia in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE and was conquered by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BCE. Gandhara long served as an important artistic gateway between India and the West. Provenance: Ex-Private Collector USA, Acquired Before 1960.
