A small Central African Congo Lega hand carved wood mask. The Lega mask has important symbolic and ritual significance. The masks were used for initiation into the first two levels of Bwami society and were covered with white clay Pemba each time they were used. The mask is covered with a beautiful white textured patina. The mask has a characteristic elongated shape, a flat nose, prominent eyes, and a smiling mouth. The mask is decorated with natural fibers below. This type of mask was used as part of the cult of the Bwami, an association that organized the social structure and ensured the stability of the Lega community.
