A West African figurine from the Baule or Baolet people. The figurine is modeled in the form of an anthropomorphic female figure with classic Baule features.standing on a turtle. The figurine is covered with red and black pigments. The red colour is associated with birth and rebirth in most African traditions and is therefore viewed as a female colour. The bright red implies the highest sexual attractiveness and fertility, and refers to a woman who promises to bear her future husband many children. Circa: the first half of the 20th century.
