Attributed to Varvara Fyodorovna Stepanova, Russian, 1894 to 1958, mixed media painting on paper depicting an abstract composition. Unsigned. A paper label, inscribed in Russian and French the print, A copper candle holder for four candles on a long balloon shaped stem and a broken ornament of two lions, at the top there is a double headed eagle, Moscow work of the 17th century, Museum of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of Arts in St. Petersburg, on the backside. Varvara Fedorovna Stepanova is a Soviet avant garde artist, representative of constructivism, designer and poet, wife and colleague of Alexander Rodchenko. She also worked and exhibited under the pseudonym Varst. Alongside her husband Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova played a pivotal role in advocating for revolutionary ideals over traditional aesthetic values.
