An antique Russian Orthodox hand painted icon of Christ Pantocrator. The icon depicts Christ holding the New Testament in his left hand and making the gesture of teaching or of blessing with his right. At the top edge is the obligatory Greek name for Jesus Christ in the halo, the abbreviation for the one who is tormented. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is a central to southern Russian work on a gold background. It was created in the first half of the 19th century. Provenance:The Icon Gallery in Franconia.
