A large and important Japanese incense burner attributed to Namakawa Sosuki. The burner features three straight legs, the bulbous body adorned with swirling clouds motifs, three pictorial medallions painted with birds in landscapes, having two protruding handles and a matched lid covered with intricate polychrome patterns. Namikawa Sosuke was a Japanese cloisonne artist, known for innovations that developed cloisonne enamel into an artistic medium sharing many features with paintings. He and Namikawa Yasuyuki were the most famous cloisonne artists of the 1890 to 1910 period, known as the golden age of Japanese enamels.
