Paul McCarthy, American b. 1945, a Post Impressionist oil painting on masonite board depicting a landscape with a house and trees. Signed and dated lower right, P. McCarthy, Sept 76. Paul McCarthy, who caused a public sensation primarily with his music performances and sculptures, is one of the influential American artists of the present. He trained as a painter from 1969, first at the University of Utah and then at the San Francisco Art Institute. From 1972 he studied at UCLA, specializing in film, video and art. While the American was initially occupied with performances and actions on the theme of gravity, from the mid-1970s he focused on sexually provocative works, in which unorthodox materials such as food or bodily fluids were also used.
