A pair of antique Japanese Satsuma pottery vases. Late Meiji era, before 1912. Miniature amphoras mounted elephant figures. The vases are decorated with a depiction of Buddhist monks, or Arhat, with a white dragon. Richly gilded. Makers mark with Shimazu family crest on the bottom. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated.
