Lang Shining, also known as Giuseppe Castiglione, 1688 to 1766, ink and color painting on silk scroll depicting a horse in a landscape. Three red seals in the upper part. Red seal in the upper part and lower right. Inscribed with calligraphy and two red seals, lower left. Lang Shining was an Italian Jesuit missionary who became a court painter in China during the Qing Dynasty. Born in Milan, Italy, in 1688, Lang Shining arrived in China in 1715. He quickly gained fame for his artistic talents, particularly in Western-style painting and oil painting techniques, which he skillfully combined with traditional Chinese painting styles.
