Nguyen Hoang Hoanh, Vietnamese, born 1937, oil painting on canvas depicting a portrait of Bao Dai, the last Emperor of Vietnam, 2017. Signed, a red seal, and dated, lower right. Framed. Painter Nguyen Hoang Hoanh was born in 1937 in old Cho Lon, now Duc Hoa, Long An. He studied and graduated from the National College of Fine Arts in Saigon, the first class of 1955-1960, along with classmates Nguyen Van Thuong, Truong Van Y, and Luu Tan Phuoc. After graduating, he taught art in Can Tho. In mid 1963, he was drafted into the Saigon army. He was discharged in 1968 and returned to teach at the Bien Hoa School of Fine Arts until 1973. From 1973 to early 1975, he taught and worked as an assistant to the Director of the National College of Fine Arts in Saigon. He won First Prize in the Literature and Art Creation Competition of the President of the Republic of Vietnam in 1970 with the silk painting Uprising. Second Prize went to famous realist painter Do Quang Em with the oil painting One Day Passed. His paintings are currently preserved in the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts according to Uyen Huy.
