A World War II model Nazi German military decoration, the Ostmedaille, Eastern Medal. Also known as the Winter Battle in the East 1941–42 Medal. The Eastern Medal was created by ordinance of Adolf Hitler on 26 May 1942 to award the members of Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS who served on the German Eastern Front during the winter campaign. Over three million medals were issued and many more manufactured. Designed by Ernst Krauit. Zinc medal in gun-metal coating. The obverse depicts a Reichsadler with swastika and laurel. The reverse features the inscription Winterschlacht im Osten 194-42, a crossed sword and branch. Helmet and stick grenade finial below the fitting ring.
