An antique Russian or Ukrainian Orthodox icon of the Pelican Allegory. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The image of the Savior in the form of a Pelican is based on the idea of the Gospel: self sacrifice, deification through the communion of the Body and Blood of Christ. The pelican is a symbol of eternal life, resurrection and love for children. Inscribed in Church Slavonic, lower to the center. Circa: the second half of the 19th century.
