A pair of rare symmetrical large antique Japanese, late Meiji era, Totai porcelain vases. Each vase has a globular shaped body and a fluted mouth. The exteriors of the wares are covered with polychrome enamel figural medallions with flowers and butterflies surrounded by floral, foliage, and foliate scroll ornaments made in the Cloisonne technique.The bases and the necks are adorned with floral, foliage and geometrical patterns made in the same technique. Circa: late 19th century to early 20th century. Totai Shippo is the name given to Japanese cloisonne on ceramics, both on earthenwares and on porcelain. It has a similar appearance to metallic cloisonne ware, with metal cloisons sometimes individually filled with different colours however, some parts of the surface might be left decorated as normal blue and white porcelain, as is done on the inside of the lid of this item.
