Lot 0278: ANCIENT PRE COLUMBIAN AMERICA OLMEC JADE MASK

41 reviews

An ancient Olmec mask from Pre Columbian America made of green jade. The mask is an oval male face, apparently screaming. It has blind holes in the eyes, nose, and mouth, and large through holes in the middle of the forehead and mouth, which was probably associated with the ritual purposes for which it was used. Comes with a heavy stand. The Olmecs flourished during Mesoamericas formative period, dating roughly from as early as 1500 BCE to about 400 BCE. They were the first Mesoamerican civilization and laid many of the foundations for the civilizations that followed. South American Collectibles, Home Decor.
