A WWII era Japanese composition with hand made dolls. The doll depicts the famous hero of the Japanese epic warrior, the monk Yamabushi Benkei, famous for his skill in wielding a large yari spear in his hands and a large tachi sword at his belt. Babkay is dressed in an expensive silk kimono, a short brocade jacket with large shoulders katagina and light brocade hakama. On his head is a kaburimono headdress in the form of a scarf that hides his hair, a persons social status was determined in Japan by the style of his hair. Benkei holds a long yari spear in his hands. Material: porcelain, brocade, silk, metal, wood, Japanese paper, varnish, eyes glass. The composition is adorned with the second doll dressed in a traditional costume with gilded floral and foliage motifs, seated on a fence. Mounted on a rectangular shaped wooden stand.
