A lot of three pre WWII era Japanese pottery sake bowls of the Imperial Japanese Army soldier. Hand painted with a gilded design representing the flags of the Imperial Japanese Army and the Rising sun. Glazed in white. One cup is adorned with blue enamel accents, and an impressed floral motif, on the bottom. Gilded rims. Each cup is decorated with Calligraphic inscriptions written in the kanji alphabet used before 1946 and are read in reverse compared to the currently accepted Japanese writing. This is another reason why printed cups are difficult to counterfeit. Especially if the inscription is poetic not all Japanese are now familiar with this letter. Porcelain cups were made to order, and, as a rule, they bear the name of the owner and the number of his military unit. Sake was a part of Japanese military culture, and its consumption is included in military rituals. One of them was a sip of sake before the last flight. The Imperial Japanese Army, IJA, was the principal ground force of the Empire of Japan. Two cups are marked wit gilded Calligraphy marks, on the bottom.
