Lot 0211: ANTIQUE 19TH C RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT OLGA OF KIEV

41 reviews

An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon of Saint Princess Olga of Kiev. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Richly gilded. Titled in Church Slavonic. Saint Olga is known for her subjugation of the Drevlians, a tribe that had killed her husband Igor. Even though it was her grandson Vladimir who adopted Christianity and made it the state religion, she was the first ruler to be baptized, making her one of the most revered saints in Orthodox Christianity. Religious Christian Collectibles, Russian Icon Painting.
