An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon of Saint Maximus the Confessor. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Titled in Church Slavonic. The icon is enclosed in a wooden kiot framing case. Maximus the Confessor, ca. 580 to 662, was a Christian monk and scholar. He is venerated in both the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches.
