An antique Russian Orthodox icon of Mother Of God Kazanskaya. The hand painted icon with egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood panel. The icon is overlaid with a silver gilt oklad or riza chased and engraved with finely detailed patterns. Circa the late 19th century. Hallmarked with a Cyrillic assay mark A.Sh. under the date 1896, an 84 Russian silver standard, crossed anchors for St. Petersburg, and the makers mark: A.U., possibly for Uzikov Alexander Semenovich, owner of a silverware workshop, 1880-1908. The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is a revered miraculous icon of the Mother of God, which appeared in Kazan in 1579. One of the most revered icons of the Russian Orthodox Church. Three Kazan icons became the most significant in Russian history: Appeared in Kazan, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. Antique Russian Religious Items and Collectibles. Weight 751 grams.
