William Richard Ferguson Wilson was born in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland in 1849, son of Charles Heath Wilson. William was educated at Glasgow Academy and studied under his father, who was headmaster of Glasgow School of Art 1849 to 1864. In 1869, his father Charles Wilson and his family left Scotland and settled at Florence, where he was involved with a large literary and artistic circle. Young William was a landscape and genre painter who exhibited under the name of William Heath Wilson, at the Royal Academy 1884 to 1899 from Florence and various London addresses also exhibiting at the Birmingham Royal Society of Artists; Fine Art Society; Grosvenor Gallery; Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Walker Art Gallery Manchester City Art Gallery; New English Art Club; the Royal Society of British Artists; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Society of British Artists, from Florence in 1880, London in 1885, Betchworth, Surrey in 1896 and Wenhaston, Suffolk in 1908.
