Lot 0353: PRE COLUMBIAN AMERICA OLMEC MASK MADE OF JADE

41 reviews

An ancient Olmec mask from Pre Columbian America carved of jade. The item represents an abstract mans face with a stern, hard expression. The face has harshly carved facial features, and eyes with drilled holes in the center of the pupil. The same drill slits are in the nose, in the corners of the lips, and on the upper part of the face. The head is flat, the forehead is roughly cut down to the middle. Comes with a heavy stand. The Olmecs flourished during Mesoamericas formative period, dating from as early as 1500 BCE to about 400 BCE. They were the first Mesoamerican civilization and laid many of the foundations for the civilizations that followed. South American Historical Collectibles, Home Decor.
