An antique Korean Unified Silla gilt bronze figurine of a Buddha. Circa 10th century. Maitreya, the Future Buddha, whose name in Sanskrit means Loving Kindness. Scholars attributed the origin of the pensive Maitreya to the young Prince Siddhartha in a meditation pose. The oldest of such pensive bronze Buddha Maitreya in Korea dates to the late seventh century. Buddha Maitreya is seated on an inverted facing lotus, leaning slightly forward with hand fingers gently touching his cheek, while his other hand is placed above the right ankle that rests on the pendent left foot. Unified Silla, or Late Silla, is the name often applied to the Korean kingdom of Silla, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, after 668 CE.
