Lot 0404: ANTIQUE JAPANESE MEIJI ERA CLOISONNE ENAMEL KOGO BOX

41 reviews

An antique Japanese, late Meiji era, rectangular shaped covered enamel over copper kogo or box for incense. The cover of the box is enameled with a polychrome design depicting a rooster in a pond landscape with blossoming flowers made in the Cloisonne technique. The body and the borders of the ware are adorned with polychrome floral, foliage, and butterfly ornaments made in the same technique. The bottom is decorated with a floral design made in the Cloisonne technique. Circa: late 19th century to the early 20th century. A kogo is used for holding incense and historically most often at the tea ceremony, the temple, or for the small worship area in the home. The kogo is also a wonderful item of character to decorate with, in addition to placing small items in, and around the house or office.
