Lot 0406: ANTIQUE JAPANESE MEIJI ERA CLOISONNE ENAMEL KOGO BOX

41 reviews

An antique Japanese, late Meiji era, covered enamel over copper kogo or box for incense. The cover of the box is enameled with a polychrome design depicting a portrait of a Geisha lady in a garden surrounded by floral and foliate scroll motifs made in the Cloisonne technique. The body is adorned with polychrome images of blossoming flowers surrounded by a foliate scroll ornament made in the same technique. The borders feature foliage, and circular patterns made in the same technique. The base is decorated with scaly, and circular ornaments made in the Cloisonne technique. Circa: late 19th century to the early 20th century. A kogo is used for holding incense and historically most often at the tea ceremony, the temple, or for the small worship area in the home. The kogo is also a wonderful item of character to decorate with, in addition to placing small items in, and around the house or office.
