An antique Japanese, late Meiji era, covered enamel over copper kogo or box for incense. The cover of the box is enameled with a polychrome design depicting a butterfly surrounded by floral and foliage motifs made in the Cloisonne technique. The body is adorned with polychrome images of blossoming flowers made in the same technique. The borders feature swirl, and circular patterns made in the same technique. The base is adorned with a scaly ornament made in the Cloisonne technique. The ground is inlaid with a Goldstone. Circa: late 19th century to the early 20th century. A kogo is used for holding incense and historically most often at the tea ceremony, the temple, or for the small worship area in the home. The kogo is also a wonderful item of character to decorate with, in addition to placing small items in, and around the house or office.
