An antique late 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon of Smolensk Mother of God. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is enclosed in a gilt silver riza or oklad, a protecting case with repousse work, as well as a wooden kiot framing case. Titled in Church Slavonic in the bottom middle. There is a suspension ring on the backside. Virgin of Smolensk is a highly venerated Orthodox icon of Hodegetria iconography. The original icon dates back to the early 15th century.
