An African musical wooden instrument of the early 20th century thumb piano. The object is carved from wood by hand, and the metal plates on the top of the instrument are of different lengths to create different sounds when pressed with a finger. On the reverse side, there is a hole to enhance vibration. The thumb piano, or mbira a name derived from the Shona language of Zimbabwe a type of idiophone, which includes instruments that vibrate without the need for strings or membranes.
