An antique Etruscan ceramic Pyxis lidded vessel, a reproduction of the Grand Tour. The well detailed storage jar with a globular body, two handles, a low foot, a short neck, and a flared rim. The central decorative band is extensively embellished with Orientalized designs of a winged Sphinx and Waterfowl, presumably a swan. Such objects were a popular souvenir production during the Grand Tour era, the 17th to early 19th century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper class young European men. Roman Historical Collectibles, Grand Tour Souvenirs.
