JAPANESE MEIJI IMARI BLACK SHIP PORCELAIN TABLEWARE SET

An antique Japanese Imari-style hand-painted porcelain tableware service. Meiji era, 1868 to 1912. A total of 31 items, including plates, lidded cups, saucers, bowls, serving dishes. Black Ship design. The central roundel encloses a Dutch three-master ship at sea, surrounded by a large border with two smaller panels enclosing a similar ship and two faux coats-of-arms, divided by pairs of standing Dutchmen. Cobalt blue, green, red, and gold color palette. The saucers have a Kanji hallmark on the bottom. Imari ware is a Western term for a brightly-coloured style of Japanese export porcelain from the Arita region in the 17-18th centuries. The Black Ship design refers to the Nanban trade period of the 16th and 17th centuries, when European traders and missionaries started actively engaging with Japan.
