It was published for 48 years, from December 18, 1869, to September 28, 1918, at the publishing house of A. F. Marx in St. Petersburg. The Niva positioned itself as a magazine for family reading and was aimed at a wide range of readers. The publication published literary works, historical, and popular science, and various anniversary essays, reproductions, and engravings of paintings by contemporary artists.
