Lot 0002: ANTIQUE WILLIAM PARR ENGRAVING AFTER HANS HOLBEIN

An antique book illustration, colored engraving on pink paper, William Parr, Marquess of Northampton by Francesco Bartolozzi, published by John Chamberlaine, after Hans Holbein. Published, 2 November 1796. The portrait of William Parr, over half length to left, looking ahead with hands folded, wearing plumed hat, fur stole over doublet, and medal suspended from cord around his neck. Titled in the plate, In His Majestys Collection, lower to the center. Inscribed in the plate, lower right and left. Framed. Hans Holbein the Younger, c. 1497 to 1543, was a German Swiss painter and printmaker who worked in a Northern Renaissance style, and is considered one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century. Francesco Bartolozzi, 1727 to 1815, was an Italian engraver, whose most productive period was spent in London. He is noted for popularizing the crayon method of engraving.
