Lot 0090: ATTR TO JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT MIXED MEDIA PAINTING

41 reviews

Attribued to Jean Michel Basquiat, American, 1960 to 1988, mixed media, acrylic and oil pastel, painting on canvas, Family Portrait, 1983. Signed with a monogram, and dated lower right. It is a good example of the artists world of expression and childhood memories. The top two faces are, the one to the right is of his mother and the one to the left is for his father, which he always simples it with the letter, M. Both faces painted as in anger and emotionally disturbed. The three young faces on bottom of the painting are, the first on the right is the young artist and the other two are for his two sisters. He painted himself with an open mouth which simplies that he is rejecting what's going on or crying while his two younger sisters are just there. Then their are many Xs marks build up on the left side of the painting where is dad image, which simply means, wrong. There is a black thick line that starts from the dads side and surrounds the mothers side and gets down in the shape of an arrow pointing on him, which means the trouble starts from the dad including the mother and it ends up on him. And what supports this is the two plus + simples that can be seen under both figures, dad and mom. Then the black line it goes up from the artists image to finally points to an eye, thus eye is the simple of the factor from the artist, expaining, that I have seen that and I was witnessing it. Jean Michel Basquiat was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo expressionism movement, one of the first African American artists to reach international stature in the art world. His art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique. He used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection. In 1983 he befriended his idol, Andy Warhol, and the two collaborated on several projects. One of a kind artwork.
