Toyohara Kunichika, Japanese, 1835 to 1900, original antique Edo period ukiyo e triptych color woodblock prints on paper, Kabuki Play Keisei Soga Kuruwa Kagami. Actors Sawamura Tanosuke III as Jirai no Oyuki, unidentified actor as the Teahouse Waiter Chaya otoko Shinza, Bando Kamezo I as Tomeba Kuji Hishioto, and Ichimura Kakitsu IV as Orochimaru Tatsugoro.Theater: Ichimura. Date: 1867. Each is signed and inscribed with Calligraphy in the plate. the red seals. Toyohara Kunichika was a Japanese woodblock print artist. At about thirteen he became a student of Tokyos then leading print maker, Utagawa Kunisada. His deep appreciation and knowledge of kabuki drama led to his production primarily of yakusha-e, which are woodblock prints of kabuki actors and scenes from popular plays of the time.
