An antique late 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon of Kazan Mother of God. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Gilt silver riza or oklad with repousse decor. Titled in Church Slavonic in the bottom middle. Hallmark of 84 silver standard and makers marks are on the rim of the riza. The backside is lined with red velvet. Mother of God of Kazan icon is known as the Holy Protectress of Russia. Miniature format of this lot indicates that it was part of a wedding couple, a composition of two icons, the Savior and the Most Holy Mother of God, which are commonly used during the sacrament of the wedding for blessing.
