A vintage reproduction of a handcrafted vessel from the Moche civilization. Circa the mid of the 20th century, 1960s. Apparently it was an object to spread the scent with fire at the bottom and aromatic additives at the top. Made in the form of a head with a wide open mouth above which fragrant smoke was supposed to rise. Moche, Andean civilization that flourished from the 1st to the 8th century on the northern coast of what is now Peru. The name is taken from the great site of Moche, in the river valley of the same name, which appears to have been the capital or chief city of the Moche peoples.
