An antique bronze sculpture, Theseus Fighting the Centaur Bianor. Cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne, from the model by Antoine Louis Barye, French, 1795 to 1875. The sculpture became a real triumph at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1850. Mounted on a sculptural base. Signed, Barye, on the base. Mounted on a rectangular shaped marble stand. Antoine Louis Barye was a sculptor of animal subjects and acclaimed as the founder of what became known as the French Animaliers School. Among his patrons were representatives of the state government and royalty including the Duke of Orleans and the Dukes of Luynes, Montpensier and Nemours.
