An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon representing St. Maximus the Confessor. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. Maximus the Confessor, also spelled Maximos, otherwise known as Maximus the Theologian and Maximus of Constantinople (c. 580 – 13 August 662), was a Christian monk, theologian, and scholar. In Eastern Christianity, Maximus has always been influential.
